03/08/2010 - UPDATE ON (RET.) PORTLAND MOTOR OFFICER TOM FENNELL - Here is a quick update on Tom as of Saturday March 6th. Tom is still in Emanuel Hospital ICU. He is now breathing on his own and was able to give me a phone call. It was great to hear him sounding amazingly good considering the route he has come. He is still sedated but is alert and aware of what has happened. He is scheduled for surgery on his leg Monday morning. Doctors words, "it's a mess in there"! Hopefully, he will be moved to a private room after that and could begin having visitors. Once again, the family is asking that you keep Tom and his family in your thoughts and prayers. I will keep you updated on his progress.
03/02/2010 - RetiredPorltand Police Motor Officer Tom Fennell Down - On Thursday February 25th at approximately 4:00 PM, retired Portland Police Motor Officer and NAMOA member Tom Fennell was involved in a serious injury accident. Tom was one of the early Portland Police Bureau Members to join NAMOA in the mid 90s and was part of the planning committee for the Portland Conference and a Motor Instructor for Portland until retiring. Tom was riding his personal motorcycle on a two lane country road near his home in rural Clackamas County. As he approached an oncoming County utility vehicle, the operator of the vehicle made a sudden left turn directly in front of Tom's motorcycle. Tom braked, swerved and attempted to avoid the County tractor/brush mower but was unable to avoid the collision. The impact threw Tom and his motorcycle into a four foot ditch along the roadway. Tom sustained multiple external and internal injuries. He was transported to Portland's Legacy Emanual Trauma Hospital by Life Flight Helicopter. He is currently in the Intensive Care Unit. According to his wife Missy, he has several broken bones, including a broken left leg, broken left shoulder (clavicle), seven broken ribs, a slight laceration of the spleen and deep cuts to the back of his head. At this time, he is receiving mechanical assistance with his breathing and they are keeping him heavily sedated. Doctors are waiting for the reduction of swelling in his leg and internal organs prior to attempting surgery on his leg. He is expected to be in the hospital for an extended period of time. The family is requesting no visitors at this time and will let us know when Tom is able to see friends. They are also requesting that you keep Tom and his family in your thoughts and prayers! This information is provided by long time NAMOA Member and retired Portland Police Motor Instructor Gary Cerotsky.
